No. 22: Boyle’s Livestock Transport

James Nason March 26, 2025

Boyle’s Livestock Transport has been part of the fabric of the western Victorian livestock industry since 1957 when Kelvin Boyle began using his father’s Ford body truck to transport livestock for the region’s sheep and cattle farmers.

Today Boyle’s operates a fleet of 18 prime movers from its depot at Mepunga near Warrnambool in south-west Victoria, concentrating primarily on saleyard, feedlot, abattoir and live export work across Victoria and the southern NSW Riverina, and stretching across into meatworks and saleyards work in South Australia.

After two generations of ownership by the Boyle family, the business in 2023 changed hands with former driver Joel Haberfield taking over the reins.

Boyle’s Livestock Transport operates in every state, with work evenly split between the cattle and sheep industries. About 4000 cattle and up to 10,000 sheep and lambs are transported every week, mostly to abattoirs but also from saleyards to local farms.

The company operates mostly Kenworth prime movers powered by Cummins engines.

The same running gear throughout the fleet means Boyle’s is well equipped with spare parts inventory to handle maintenance and repairs on all vehicles.

Most of the trucks are run as B-double cattle trailer configurations, all on air-bag suspension and equipped with hydraulic ramps, internal lighting, non-bruise sides and the option of both big and short penning, depending on customer and load requirements.

Anthony Boyle who sold the business to Joel in 2023 has previously represented the industry as president of the Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Victoria and his association continues at a national level as a member of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association national executive committee until recently stepping in to fill the role of ALRTA interim executive director.
