A NEW testimonial prepared as part of the meat processing industry’s More to Meat campaign has highlighted the vast spectrum of work skills now required across the red meat processing industry and agriculture in general.

Launched last year by the Australian Meat Processor Corporation, More to Meat highlights the array of jobs and skills required in the processing sector, which employs almost 140,000 Australians, mostly in regional and rural areas.

The latest example is based on the experience of Tamworth-based environmental officer Stephen Hatch, pictured above.

Tamworth is a significant centre for red meat processing in NSW. Thomas Foods International, one of two red meat processors in the regional city – has been part of the community for years, and the business plays an essential role in supporting the local economy and jobs.

The company directly employs 975 staff, including general labourers, meat slicers, tradies, and science-related jobs among the dozens of roles at the site.

Working closely with farmers, TFI Tamworth processes, packages, and helps to deliver high quality red meat to retail supermarket outlets across Australia, which eventually lands on family dinner tables.

TFI Tamworth joined the More to Meat campaign to promote the opportunities in the industry.

One of the local TFI employees featured on the platform is Stephen Hatch, who works as an Environmental Advisor responsible for the plant’s extensive wastewater treatment facility.

Between 2012 and 2022, he combined part-time work in the industry while he studied environmental sciences at the University of New England.

He always knew there were jobs in red meat processing, but was unaware at just how unique the industry really was, with niches such as his own job.

Mr Hatch is clearly passionate about the industry’s future, contributing to his own skills and ensuring families across Australia have access to high-quality foods.

After graduating, he picked up his current job in red meat processing, and hasn’t looked back.

“The job diversity and endless opportunities in red meat processing provides the flexibility to have a great work-life balance,” he said.

Stephen is an example of the increasing opportunity for people with a university education, particularly in the sciences, in red meat processing.

“Whether starting your career in the industry, or simply enjoying delicious Australian red meat products at home, supporting Australia’s red meat processing industry will help to create careers for the next generation, and help to keep regional communities strong,” the More to Meat campaign says.
